Learning
At Severnbanks we follow a text enhanced approach to our literacy/ topic work. Each term, the teacher selects a text that will support the learning. In year 2 we read and used...
The Blue Balloon, Miranda the Explorer and Hot Air are the text used for term 1. The children in year 2 were learning about flight.
Read together - The Blue Balloon
In year 2 we continue our journey with phonics applying our knowledge to writing and reading.
We are mathematicians. We use concrete apparatus to aid us with our mathematical understanding.
In term 2 the class read Q Pootle 5 and The Wright Brothers.
Q Pootle 5 thinks he knows what the problem is, in fact he is sure. The problem is that the rocket is broken, it needs a new rocket booster. But where on earth will this little alien find a rocket booster ? A green earthing comes along but he can’t help and neither can three birds. Perhaps Colin the Cat might be able to help – when he’s finished his dinner that is…
To support our learning about flight, we visit Aerospace in Bristol.
Here we are inside Concorde and a helicopter.
We saw how large Concorde was.
We also explored the museum and had lessons in the classroom!
Term 3 We read- I wouldn’t want to be in the Great Fire of London and Toby and the Great Fire of London. This is to enhance our historical learning and knowledge.
Term 4 We read -Titanic to help us discover what happened when the Titanic collided with an iceberg and began to sink!
This is the story of the Titanic told with a twist. The central character is a mouse with big ambitions. In this regard he’s no different from all the elegant passengers on board this magnificent vessel. We know what happened to the Titanic. Would the mouse, Samson, realise his dreams?
Science
In term 1, the children went on a material hunt around the school to begin their science unit of work on materials and their properties. They discussed why certain objects are made of particular materials. They also identified objects which were made of more than one material. The class also uses our local environment to explore season changes including creatures. We are scientists.
We learn about animals, including humans, and this includes growth and germs.
Art/ D and T
In Art the children learnt how to make different marks with charcoal. The children experimented with different ways to create different effects. They then had a go at expressing different vocabulary, such as ‘wrinkles’ using charcoal. We are artist.
We are musicians.
We learnt that dynamics refers to a change in volume of sound (e.g. louder/quieter)
We experimented with instruments to make sounds representing each animal.
We worked together in groups to create a short section of sound to represent an animal.
We are Geographers Year 2 have continue their learning from Y1 about continents. We have compare the UK to Kenya. We look at countries which are on the equator. We understand that because we do not live close to the equator, then our weather is not that warm. We go outside to look at the weather and to understand which way the playground faces affects how much sunlight it gets.
We love being active and being athletes. We have learnt ball skills-how to send and receive balls.
We used skills to control the ball around a cone. We also used cones as a target to improve our hand and eye coordination.
We have also learnt about gymnastics. We can move around the gym using different parts of our body. We use the equipment safely.
